THE BE-ATTITUDE OF CONTENTMENT
I Timothy 6: 6-10
6 But godliness {actually} is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. 7 For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. 8 If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
I ENTWINED - vs. 6
Paul is giving us a spiritual formula in vs.6:
GODLINESS + CONTENTMENT = GREAT GAIN ( SUCCESS )
Godliness: WHO I am
- being UNSATISFIED with my character formation in God
Contentment: WHAT I have
- being SATISFIED with what I possess in God
Contentment is a satisfaction with God’s SUFFICIENT provision.
II ETERNAL - vs. 7
You’re leaving this earth with just as much as you came with!!!!
III ENOUGH is ENOUGH - vs. 8
· Food
· Covering
IV ENTRAPMENT - vs. 9
Look at the 5 disastrous consequences for “those who want to get rich.”
Some examples:
1. John D. Rockefeller: “I have made millions, but they have brought me no
happiness.”
2. Cornelius Vanderbilt: “The care of millions of dollars is too great a load.”
3. John Jacob Astor: “ I am the most miserable man on earth.”
4. Henry Ford: “ I was happier as a boy working in a mechanic’s shop, though we
had nothing.”
WANT = settled desire
TEMPTATION – Money allows you to go places and do things and experience pressures to sin that others will never know.
SNARE = trap
V EVIL
- vs. 10
VI ENROLLMENT - Philippians 4:11
11 Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in
whatever
circumstances I am.
* SEEK it – Proverbs 30: 8-9
8 Keep deception and lies far from me, Give
me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, 9 That I not be full and deny {You} and say, "Who is the
LORD?" Or that I not be in want and steal, And profane the name of my God.
* SAY it – Philippians 4:19
19 And my God will supply all your needs
according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
* SETTLE it – Psalm 62: 10
62 If riches increase, do not set your heart upon them.”
